Background to the SFR
| This Statistical First Release (SFR) covers post-16 education and skills, showing learner participation, outcomes and the level of highest qualification held. Its aim is to present the performance of the further education system, and to hold the Government to account over delivery of policy. The SFR is produced by the Data Service, on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. The SFR is a National Statistics publication. For more information on National Statistics, please visit here. For further breakdowns of the statistics in the SFR, please visit the FE Data Library. |

An external review of the format, content and timing of post-16 learning SFRs was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers in September 2007. More information on the SFR Review can be found here. A key recommendation of the review was to move to publishing an SFR once every quarter, covering the range of government-funded learning. |

|
Having been through an annual cycle of quarterly publications, we have conducted a small review of the timing and presentation of the Release. This is to ensure that the timing of the SFR is best aligned with when further education data becomes available, and to ensure that the presentation of statistics is relevant to any new policies introduced.
A summary of the key findings of the review can be found here.
UK Statistics Authority Assessment
In December 2010 the UK Statistics Authority published a report 'Assessment of compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics' after undertaking an assessment of the Education and Skills SFR. |
