How to use the Data Dictionary - Overview
INTRODUCTION
1. The Data Dictionary is split into eight main areas as described below, all of which can be accessed via the left hand navigation system.
BUSINESS DEFINITIONS
2. Business Definitions describe terms that are used in various aspects of the Skills Funding Agency's business, focussing on those relating to Data.
3. The Business Definitions are described in terms of a concise definition followed by a detailed description. Where appropriate, links to relevant technical definitions, datasets, external websites and other areas of interest are included.
TECHNICAL DEFINITIONS
4. This section covers a broad range of definitions to do with analysis and processing of Data including;
- Methodologies
These higher level processes cover methods used to produce reporting data from datasets and derived variables.
- Derived Variables/Data Definitions
Derived Variables are the result of combining fields of raw data to produce information more appropriate to statistical analysis. Data Definitions detail this process, including general descriptions as well as values, encoding and sample SPSS or pseudo code.
DATASETS
5. The index of datasets links to details of each individual dataset, including usage information and field lists.
6. The datasets are not necessarily available externally, but are included in the Data Dictionary to demonstrate the processing of raw data through to analysis and reports.

7. This area contains information on conventions in data reporting, including;
