Naming Conventions 2008/2009
INTRODUCTION
1. In the approach to governance around MI, naming conventions have been introduced to promote consistency throughout management information produced within the LSC.
RULES AND CONVENTIONS
2. Common rules in variable naming conventions include;
- Variable names should be under thirty characters in length.
- Underscores should be used rather than whitespace.
3. A full list of variable names and labels can be found by clicking the link below. They are listed in alphabetical order under the following headings:
- Name: The variable name that appears in the standard files in both SPSS and SQL formats. For ILR variables, this is also the name that appears in the ILR manual.
- SRP Name: This is the name that will be displayed when the Standard Files appear in SRP (Strategic Reporting Platform) and also in any cubes that are produced.
- Variable Label: A descriptive field attached to the variable in SPSS.

4. Certain variables are categorised by a common prefix as detailed in the table below.
