Business Definition Metadata

INTRODUCTION

1. The purpose of a Business definition is to describe, explain and make clear the meaning of a term (data related) used within the LSC. These will often link to more detailed technical definitions and Pseudo code. The following metadata should be maintained for each Business Definition in addition to any General Metadata.

NAME

2. A name in business terms, e.g., 'Programme Type'.

DEFINITION

3. A brief, concise description of the business definition.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

4. Many Business definitions relate to specific data objects that will be defined in more detail elsewhere in the Data Dictionary. Descriptions should not be written in technical terms, i.e. relating to specific physical database implementations, but reflect the underlying meaning within the business.

TARGET (where appropriate)

5. A number of key targets are used in many planning, policy and reporting documents. The business definition should define the appropriate target and outline its conditions.

MEASUREMENT AGAINST TARGET (where appropriate)

6. This section of the definition should provide information on the data used to measure progress towards the achievement of the target.

LINKS (where appropriate)

7. Depending on the nature of the business definition, this section can provide links to technical definitions, documentation or external sites of interest.
