HE Standard File

Note: This page is from an older version of the Data Dictionary and may therefore contain information that is now out of date. It is included here for reference only.

1 The Higher Education (HE) dataset has one row per HE aim.

Purpose

2 The HE Standard File is used for the analysis of HE aims and learners who attend Further Education (FE) providers.

Detailed definition

3 The standard files are created by running the 'standard code' on the raw data collected using the Individualised Learner Record (ILR). The standard code introduces a number of derived variables to the data which are stored in the standard files. The data is converted to both SPSS and Crystal format for analysis and reporting.

4 For FE only, if a learning aim is recorded as Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) funded and/or indicated as Higher Education (HE) level on the LSCs learning aim database (LAD), a corresponding record exists in the HE standard file. These HE data sets are requested by HEFCE and the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). There is a one to one relationship between the learning aim and the HE standard file, using L01, L03 and A05.

5 The table below shows the fields within the HE Standard File.

6 Where the variable name is of the form 'Lxx', 'Axx' or Hxx (where xx is a two digit number) then this is taken from the field of the same name in the Individualised Learner Record (ILR) datasets. The definition of each variable is given in the ILR specification. The hyperlink will take you to the ILR page where you can view the latest specification.

7 The definitions for the Derived Variables in the HE dataset, which are at learner level (those with 'L_' prefix), can be found by following the hyperlinks in the last column of the table.
