Work Based Learning (WBL) Business Definition
DEFINITION
1. Work Based Learning generally describes learning while a person is employed. The learning is usually based on the needs of the individual's career and employer, and can lead to nationally recognised qualifications.
2. Work Based Learning was also a funding methodology used by the LSC until 2007/08, to fund Work Based Learning programmes, including Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships.
DESCRIPTION
3. There are usually three components to Work Based Learning. These are practical skills, underpinning knowledge and key skills.
4. Providers of training tend to be privately funded training organisations or further education colleges. They can also be employers funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to deliver Work Based Learning programmes such as apprenticeships.
5. The Work Based Learning (WBL) funding methodology was superceeded by the Demand-led Funding (DLF) methodology from 2008/09. Most Work Based Learning, including Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships, is now funded by the Employer Responsive (ER) stream of Demand-Led Funding.
